VCD — Video CD Format
VCD (Video CD) is a video format standard from 1993 for storing standard-definition video on a standard 74/80-minute CD disc. It uses MPEG-1 video at 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL) pixels at 1.15 Mbps, with MPEG-1 Layer II (MP2) audio at 44.1 kHz. A single 74-minute CD can hold approximately 74 minutes of VCD video.
VCD's Historical Context
VCD was enormously popular in Asia during the 1990s and early 2000s as the primary consumer video format, predating widespread DVD adoption. Millions of films, TV shows, and karaoke discs were released on VCD in Hong Kong, China, India, and Southeast Asia. The format is largely obsolete today but a vast library of legacy VCD content exists.
Converting VCD Files with LetsConvert
LetsConvert converts VCD MPEG-1 video files to MP4, MKV, AVI, and other formats using FFmpeg. MPEG-1 video is transcoded to H.264 for modern containers. The 352x240 or 352x288 source resolution is preserved; upscaling can be applied if desired.
Why Convert from VCD?
VCD uses MPEG-1 at very low resolution and bitrate by modern standards. Converting to H.264 MP4 improves playback compatibility and allows integration into modern media libraries.
Common VCD Conversion Targets
- VCD → MP4: Convert for playback on any modern device.
- VCD → MKV: Convert to the open Matroska container for flexible media management.
- VCD → AVI: Convert for legacy player compatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions: VCD Format
Can I still play VCD discs?
Many modern DVD and Blu-ray players can play VCD discs. For PC playback, VLC Player supports VCD. Alternatively, rip the VCD to a computer file and convert to MP4.
How is VCD different from DVD?
DVD uses MPEG-2 video at much higher resolutions (720x480 NTSC, 720x576 PAL) and bitrates (up to 9.8 Mbps), plus Dolby Digital audio. VCD uses MPEG-1 at lower resolution and bitrate. DVD quality is significantly better than VCD.
