SMK — Smacker Game Video Format
SMK (Smacker) is a proprietary video codec and container format developed by RAD Game Tools for full-motion video (FMV) in DOS-era and early Windows games. It was widely used from approximately 1994 to 2004 before being largely superseded by the higher-quality Bink format. Smacker was designed to decode using minimal CPU time on the Intel 486 and early Pentium processors of the era.
Smacker in Classic Games
Smacker was used in hundreds of DOS and Windows 95/98 games including The 7th Guest, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, and many LucasArts titles. The format produced very small video files at low resolution (typically 320x200 or 640x480) with 8-bit colour palettes, suitable for CD-ROM distribution.
Converting SMK Files with LetsConvert
LetsConvert converts Smacker (.smk) files to MP4, MKV, AVI, and other formats using FFmpeg, which includes a Smacker decoder. The low-resolution, low-colour-depth source produces output that reflects the constraints of the original format.
Why Convert from SMK?
Smacker files cannot be played by standard modern media players without dedicated support. Converting to MP4 or AVI allows viewing classic game cinematics on any current device.
Common SMK Conversion Targets
- SMK → MP4: Convert for playback on any modern device.
- SMK → AVI: Convert for archiving classic game cinematics in a widely supported container.
- SMK → MKV: Convert to the open container for preservation.
Frequently Asked Questions: SMK Format
Why does my Smacker video look pixelated?
Smacker videos were encoded at low resolutions (typically 320x200 or 320x240) with 8-bit colour palettes for early 1990s hardware. Upscaling these sources to modern display resolutions will always show pixelation from the original low-resolution content.
What came after Smacker?
RAD Game Tools replaced Smacker with the Bink format (1997) for higher quality and colour depth, which in turn was followed by Bink 2 for modern console and PC games.
