ISO is a disc image file format that contains the complete contents of an optical disc (CD, DVD, or Blu-ray) stored as a single binary file. The format is based on the ISO 9660 standard (also known as ECMA-119) which defines the filesystem structure for optical media. ISO files are widely used for distributing operating systems (Windows, Linux distros, macOS installers), software applications, and game backups.
ISO images can contain different filesystem types: ISO 9660 (base standard), Joliet extension (adds long filenames and Unicode), Rock Ridge extension (adds Unix permissions and symlinks), and UDF (Universal Disk Format, used on DVDs and Blu-rays). Modern OS installation ISO files often combine multiple filesystem types to maximize compatibility. The El Torito standard enables bootable ISO files, which is why Linux and Windows ISOs can be written to USB drives and booted directly.
ISO files can be mounted as virtual drives natively on Windows 8+, macOS, and Linux (via the mount command or losetup). 7-Zip on Windows can extract ISO contents without mounting.
