GZ is the file extension for files compressed with GNU gzip, a free and open-source compression utility created by Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler. Like bzip2, gzip compresses a single file and is typically combined with TAR (as .tar.gz or .tgz) to archive multiple files. GZ uses the Deflate algorithm — a combination of LZ77 and Huffman coding — which provides fast compression and decompression with good compression ratios.

The Deflate algorithm used in GZ is the same algorithm used in ZIP and PNG files. GZ supports streaming compression and decompression, meaning it can begin processing data without reading the entire file first, making it memory-efficient for large files. GZ includes a CRC32 checksum for data integrity verification. The gzip format also stores the original filename and modification timestamp.

GZ decompression is natively available on all Linux and macOS systems via the gunzip and gzip commands. On Windows, Git for Windows (Git Bash), WSL, 7-Zip, and WinRAR support GZ files. The Python standard library includes the gzip module. Web servers use GZ compression (Content-Encoding: gzip) for HTTP response compression, making it one of the most widely implemented compression formats.

GZ provides fast, efficient single-file compression widely supported across all platforms. For archiving multiple files, use TAR.GZ. GZ compression is ideal for compressing individual large files like database dumps, log files, and configuration backups. For better compression of single files, BZ2 or XZ are alternatives.
