ARJ (Archived by Robert Jung) is a archive format created by Robert K. Jung in 1990. It became very popular during the DOS era as a competitor to ZIP and ARC, widely used on bulletin board systems for distributing software. ARJ supported multi-volume archives, simple password encryption, self-extracting archives, and recovery records — features that were ahead of their time in the early 1990s.
ARJ used its own compression algorithm that achieved competitive ratios compared to contemporary formats. It supported volume labels for multi-disk archives (important in the floppy disk era), archive comments, and file exclusion/inclusion masks. The ARJ format source code was eventually released as open source under the GPLv2 license, enabling continued maintenance by the open-source community.
ARJ files can be extracted on modern systems using the open-source arj command-line utility available on Linux and macOS. 7-Zip on Windows can extract ARJ archives. On Linux, the arj package is available in most distribution repositories. The format is no longer used to create new archives but old ARJ archives from the DOS era still exist and may need to be extracted.
