ARC is one of the earliest PC archive formats, created by System Enhancement Associates (SEA) in 1985. It predated ZIP in widespread use and was the dominant archive format on early PC bulletin board systems (BBS) throughout the mid-to-late 1980s. The ARC format used an LZW compression variant and supported storing multiple files in a single archive with individual file compression.
The original ARC format used a combination of compression methods including LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch), an early variant of Huffman coding, and uncompressed storage, selecting the best method per file. Phil Katz reverse-engineered ARC for his PKARC tool, leading to a legal dispute with SEA that ultimately led Katz to create the ZIP format. ARC is also the name used by the modern FreeArc project for a different, modern high-compression format.
Original SEA ARC files can be extracted with the arc command-line utility on Linux/macOS, 7-Zip (Windows), and some vintage archiving tools. FreeArc, which uses the same .arc extension for its modern format, has different extraction requirements. The format has essentially no modern use for creating new archives. Converting ARC archives to ZIP or 7Z is recommended for preserving their contents.
