XLSX files are the default Excel format since Office 2007, but many legacy systems, older ERP platforms, and some industrial software still require the older XLS (Excel 97-2003) format. Converting XLSX to XLS ensures your spreadsheet data is accessible wherever modern formats are not accepted.

Converting XLSX to XLS replaces the Open XML container with the binary Compound Document format. Our converter uses LibreOffice's MS Excel 97 writer to faithfully translate formulas, cell styles, number formats, and worksheets into the XLS structure.

XLS files are binary and self-contained, making them highly portable across older environments. While XLS does not support as many rows as XLSX (65,536 vs 1,048,576), for most real-world spreadsheets this is not a limitation. XLS is also slightly smaller than XLSX for small datasets.

Note that some advanced XLSX features introduced after Excel 2007 — such as sparklines and certain conditional formatting rules — may not carry over exactly into XLS. For standard tabular data, formulas, and formatting, the conversion is lossless.
