TZO is the short single-extension alternative to TAR.LZO — a TAR archive compressed with the LZO algorithm. A .tzo file is identical to a .tar.lzo file, just with a condensed extension. Like TAR.LZO, TZO prioritizes extreme decompression speed over compression ratio, making it suitable for embedded Linux systems and real-time applications where fast archive extraction is critical.
TZO files inherit all characteristics of TAR.LZO: LZO compression providing decompression speeds exceeding 500 MB/s, preservation of TAR Unix metadata, and the trade-off of larger file sizes compared to gzip or bzip2-compressed archives. The .tzo extension is rare and primarily encountered in specialized embedded Linux build environments. The lzop tool handles both .tar.lzo and .tzo files.
TZO files are extracted with lzop -d file.tzo followed by tar -xf, or with lzop piped through tar. The lzop package is available on Linux and via Homebrew on macOS. Mainstream Windows archive tools have limited or no support for LZO-compressed archives, making TZO impractical for cross-platform use.
TZO is a specialized format for embedded Linux environments requiring fast decompression. Its very limited tool support makes it unsuitable for general file sharing. Converting TZO to ZIP or TAR.GZ provides much better compression and broad compatibility. LetsConvert handles TZO conversion to all major archive formats.
