TZ is the short single-extension alternative to TAR.Z — a TAR archive compressed with the Unix compress utility (LZW algorithm). A .tz file is identical to a .tar.Z file. Like TAR.Z, the TZ format dates from the 1980s Unix era and was once common on early Unix FTP sites and bulletin board systems. The .tz extension was used when naming conventions preferred single extensions.
