TBZ2 is an alternative file extension for TAR.BZ2 archives. A .tbz2 file is completely identical to a .tar.bz2 file — it is a TAR archive compressed with bzip2, just using a condensed single-extension naming convention. The .tbz2 extension is more common than .tbz and is the form used by FreeBSD ports and packages (FreeBSD historically used .tbz2 for package distribution). Some build systems and package managers prefer the single-extension form.
As TBZ2 is the same format as TAR.BZ2, it inherits all TAR.BZ2 characteristics: bzip2 Burrows-Wheeler block-sorting compression providing better ratios than gzip, preservation of Unix file permissions and metadata, and full directory structure support. FreeBSD used TBZ2 for its binary package system before switching to pkg (which uses a different format). Some Linux distributions also generate TBZ2 archives for package distribution.
TBZ2 files are extracted with tar -xjf file.tbz2 on Linux and macOS, identical to TAR.BZ2. On Windows, 7-Zip and WinRAR handle TBZ2 files without needing any special configuration. Tools that detect archive format by file content rather than extension (such as file_magic) will correctly identify TBZ2 as a bzip2-compressed TAR archive.
