RZ is the file format produced by rzip, a compression utility written by Andrew Tridgell (the creator of Samba and rsync), designed specifically for compressing large files. Rzip uses a two-pass compression approach: in the first pass, it scans the entire file looking for long-range duplicate data that could be separated by up to 900 MB — far beyond what any dictionary-based compressor like gzip or bzip2 can handle. The matched regions are replaced with back-references, then the result is passed through bzip2 for final compression.
The rzip approach is particularly effective for large files containing repetitive data spread far apart, such as kernel build directories, large source code trees, database dumps, and virtual machine disk images. By first eliminating long-range redundancy that bzip2 cannot detect, rzip can achieve significantly better compression than bzip2 alone on suitable files. However, for files without long-range redundancy, rzip performs similarly to or only slightly better than bzip2 alone.
RZ files can be created and extracted with the rzip command on Linux. The rzip package is available in most Linux distribution repositories. On macOS, rzip can be installed via Homebrew. The format has very limited support in mainstream archive tools — it is not supported by 7-Zip or WinRAR on Windows. The lrzip tool (Long Range ZIP) is a modern successor that adds LZMA compression support.
