LZ is the file format produced by lzip, a lossless data compressor written by Antonio Diaz Diaz (with original work by Juan González-Gomez), first released in 2009. Lzip uses the LZMA (Lempel-Ziv-Markov chain Algorithm) compression algorithm — the same algorithm used in 7Z and XZ formats — providing excellent compression ratios comparable to XZ. Like other single-file compressors, lzip is typically used with TAR for multi-file archives.
Lzip distinguishes itself with a strong focus on data integrity and long-term archival. Each lzip file includes a CRC32 checksum and member size field that allow detecting and locating corruption within large archives. Lzip's format supports multi-member archives, and the lziprecover tool can repair damaged lzip files by recovering undamaged members. These features make lzip particularly well-suited for long-term data preservation.
LZ files can be decompressed with the lzip, lunzip, or plzip (parallel version) commands on Linux and macOS. The lzip package is available in most Linux distribution repositories. On Windows, some archive managers support LZ files. The format has a devoted following in the data preservation community due to its integrity features but is not widely supported by mainstream archive tools.
LZ provides LZMA compression with strong integrity checking, making it excellent for long-term archival. However, its limited tool support makes it impractical for general file sharing. Converting LZ archives to ZIP or 7Z ensures recipients can access the files with mainstream tools. LetsConvert handles LZ conversion to all major archive formats.
