LHA (also known as LZH) is an archive format and compression algorithm created by Haruyasu Yoshizaki in 1988. Originally released as LHarc, the format became one of the most popular archive formats in Japan throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, where it was the dominant format before ZIP became universal. LHA was also extremely popular on the Amiga platform, where it became the de facto standard for software distribution on Amiga File Finder (AFF) and other distribution networks.
LHA uses the LHarc LZSS (Lempel-Ziv-Storer-Szymanski) compression algorithm combined with adaptive Huffman coding, providing reasonable compression ratios for its era. The format supports multiple compression methods of varying strength and speed. LHA archives can store long filenames, file timestamps, and in later versions, basic file permissions. Self-extracting LHA archives (SFX) were also popular for software distribution on MS-DOS and early Windows systems.
LHA files can be extracted with the lhasa or lha command-line utilities on Linux and macOS. On Windows, 7-Zip supports LHA extraction. The Unarchiver on macOS handles LZH/LHA files well. The format is still in occasional use in Japan for software distribution. Japanese game publishers and software companies occasionally still distribute files in LHA format for legacy compatibility.
LHA is a legacy archive format with limited modern support outside of Japan and vintage computing communities. Converting LHA archives to ZIP or 7Z ensures broad compatibility with modern systems and software. LetsConvert handles LHA extraction and conversion to all major modern archive formats.
