IMG is a raw disk image format that stores a sector-by-sector copy of a storage device including the partition table, filesystem, and all file data. Unlike formats that extract individual files, an IMG file represents the complete binary content of a disk, partition, or removable media. IMG files are used for creating backups of SD cards (Raspberry Pi images), floppy disk images, virtual machine disk images, and optical media.
Raw IMG files have no compression or metadata overhead — they are exact binary copies of the source media. The file size equals the capacity of the source storage device regardless of how much data is actually stored. IMG files can be mounted as loop devices on Linux, attached as virtual disks to virtual machines, or written back to physical media using tools like dd, Etcher, or Raspberry Pi Imager. Many virtualization platforms use IMG or variations of it.
IMG files can be mounted on Linux with the losetup and mount commands, or via graphical tools like GNOME Disks. On macOS, hdiutil can work with some IMG files. On Windows, tools like OSFMount or WinImage handle IMG files. Virtual machine software (VirtualBox, QEMU) can use IMG files directly as disk images. Raspberry Pi OS images distributed as IMG.XZ or IMG.GZ are extremely common.
