ACE is a proprietary archive format created by Marcel Lemke in 1999 and distributed by e-merge GmbH under the WinACE brand. It gained popularity in the early 2000s in software distribution and online communities due to its high compression ratios that outperformed ZIP and RAR at the time. ACE used a proprietary compression algorithm that achieved excellent results on text files, executables, and software installers.
ACE supported features including multi-volume archives, AES encryption, self-extracting archives, and recovery records for damaged archive repair. Active development of WinACE ceased around 2007, leaving the format without updates or security patches. In 2019, a critical path traversal vulnerability (CVE-2018-20250) was discovered in the ACE extraction library, causing major archive tools to drop ACE support for security reasons.
ACE archives require specialized software to open. WinACE was the original creator tool but is no longer maintained or available. Some older versions of WinRAR (before 5.70) supported ACE extraction, but support was removed due to security vulnerabilities. On Linux, the unace utility provides extraction capability. Converting ACE to a modern format like ZIP or 7Z is strongly recommended.
ACE is considered an obsolete and insecure archive format. Its proprietary nature, abandoned development, and known security vulnerabilities make it unsuitable for current use. Converting ACE archives to ZIP, 7Z, or RAR preserves your files in a modern, actively maintained format with broad software support. LetsConvert makes ACE conversion easy and safe.
